Almost daily we hear of the negative effects one-time use plasticshaveon our planetand it feels like we are on a sinking ship.Sometimes it seems that our individual efforts go unnoticedand its impossible to reverse the problem but this is not the case. Like any change it has to start small to make a big impact. Looking at the stats below we need to start or our mother ship we call earth is in serious trouble.
Over50billion plastic bottlesare purchased each year.If you staked them end to end that’sabout4.7 million miles or 7.6 million kilometres. That isto the moon and back 20 times!!!
We purchasealmost 100,000 bottles per minute worldwide and 91% of them are not recycled.It takes 450 years for a plastic bottle to break down.We are going to out of spaceon earthbefore the first bottle actually decomposes. As convenient as bottled water may be, 40% of it is just tap water and it takes 3x as much water to produce one bottle.
So here is what we need to do:
If you don’t like tap water use a filter or flavor it with pressed water
Cary a REUSEABLE water bottle with you at all times such as Pressa Bottle
If your office is still stuck using “disposable” water bottles speak up and make the change. No ones to good for a glass of water so get a water cooler program started.
Although every step seems small, a movement towards eliminating single use plastics is neededand luckily we are not the only ones that feel this way. Take a look -
We have a long way to go and it seems hard to live with out it, but lets hope we look back at single use plastic as irrelevant as our old VCR.....it was for movies kids;)
